The forest's location along the western slope of the northern Green Mountains is well suited to the growth and development of northern hardwood species. The terrain, elevation and soil types on Jay Brook Forest are well suited to growing northern hardwood, as evidenced by the nearly 100% of hardwood species dominating the total volume. Property-wide the stands are growing in an even-aged or two-aged condition, where some stands offer immediate silvicultural options. The forest resource is highlighted by well-stocked stands featuring commercially attractive species. With over 4.7 million board feet of hardwood logs, the forest is well positioned to afford a steady supply of sawlogs through the next management cycle. Total volume across the property is 19.3 cords per commercial acre, which is slightly above average for the region. Forest-wide, total basal area is 107 square feet, representing well-stocked conditions.

The individual species volume break-down is led by sugar maple, with 54% of the total volume, followed by yellow birch with 25%. Nearly 80% of the total volume is comprised of commercially significant tree species. The remaining associated species are typical for a northern hardwood forest.
